Raising awareness among the general public and institutions means actively promoting inclusion and accessibility for people with low vision.

Technology at the service of empathy

Thanks to the Eyes Reality low vision simulator, based on augmented reality, it is possible to simulate numerous ocular pathologies in real-life environments.
Each pathology can be adjusted on a scale from 1 to 10 and combined with others, enabling highly accurate and realistic simulations tailored to each awareness or training scenario.

A new awareness-raising tool

Developed by CFLOU, the Eyes Reality simulator offers a new perspective on low vision.
It allows participants to be placed in real-life situations through a variety of practical workshops, such as:
reading, writing, computer use, mobility, and spatial orientation.

This tool is designed for a wide range of professionals and stakeholders, including:
ophthalmologists, occupational therapists, ergonomists, orientation and mobility instructors, occupational physicians, human resources teams, colleagues, relatives, and families.

A structured study has been carried out by the IDSD Le Phare foundation in Mulhouse, France. It was carried out on 207 people using our augmented reality low vision system as an educational tool. You can download the results below (PDF).

We've found Eyes Reality to be a really useful tool for helping people better understand the impact of different eye conditions.

One of its biggest strengths is the ability to simulate and combine different eye conditions at varying levels of progression. Traditional simulation glasses or other methods tend to represent one condition at one fixed level, whereas Eyes Reality can provide a much more realistic interpretation of how someone's functional vision may be affected.

I have been using EyesReality as part of vision awareness training with people from a range of organisations and charities, and they have become an invaluable teaching resource.

The feedback from participants has consistently been very positive. EyesReality allow us to move beyond simply talking about conditions such as aged related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and diabetic retinopathy and give participants a practical insight into some of the visual difficulties associated with them.

One of the biggest strengths is the range of conditions and the flexibility of the simulator. Participants can explore different eye conditions and combinations themselves, which makes the learning much more interactive and memorable.

I particularly value being able to have EyesReality available during the activity section of the training. Participants can mix and match conditions, compare different types of visual loss and experience how everyday tasks might become more challenging. This often generates discussion and questions and helps develop a greater understanding of the impact of sight loss.

They have therefore become much more than a demonstration tool. They are an interactive learning resource that encourages participants to explore, ask questions and develop empathy for people living with sight loss.

Overall, I find EyesReality considerably versatile and engaging. Their range, flexibility and ability to be used independently by participants make them an invaluable addition to our vision awareness training.
